ALAN SADOVNIK is Professor of Education and Sociology and (through June
30, 2003) Chair of the Department of Education and Academic Foundations
at Rutgers-Newark, where he has been a member of the faculty since
2000. Prior to coming to Rutgers he served as Professor of Education
Studies and Dean of the School of Education at Adelphi University and
Visiting Professor of Education at Teachers College, Columbia
University. He holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from New York
University and a B.A. in sociology and education from Queens College.
Professor Sadovnik’s research interests include sociology of education,
urban education, social stratification and education, and the history of
education and education policy. He is the author, editor or co-author
of many books, book chapters and articles on education policy, history
and sociology of education, including Founding Mothers and Others: Women
Educational Leaders During the Progressive Era, Palgrave @ St. Martin’s
Press 2002 (with S.F. Semel); Exploring Education: An Introduction to
the Foundations of Education, Second Edition, Allyn & Bacon 2001 (with
P.W. Cookson, Jr. and S.F. Semel); and Implementing Educational Reform:
Sociological Perspectives on Educational Policy, Ablex Publishing
Corporation 1996 (with D. Levinson, P.W. Cookson, Jr. and J. Spade).
He is also the co-author of Developing a Plan for Reestablishment of
Local Control in the State-operated School Districts (Institute on
Education Law and Policy 2002).
